Tube for Thought

Published: 17 May 2020

This little dog is unable to eat due to a nasty infection on the tip of his tongue which is causing swelling and pain. It's going to take a long time to heal and so in order to feed this patient, we have to place a feeding tube directly into his oesophagus. It sounds terrible but in fact it's all very well tolerated by patients and can stay in place for weeks at a time. Another advantage is that the owner can feed their pet directly through the tube at home with no need for hospitalisation. Once it's no longer needed, the tube is removed and the small hole heals up on its own.
