Staining a Blood-Smear Slide
for Microscopic Analysis

Published: 25 Oct 2015

Examining a blood smear from a patient under a microscope is very helpful to a veterinarian. It allows them to diagnose blood parasites, assess if there is infection present, and also helps them diagnose and classify anaemia. A drop of blood is smeared onto a slide and this is then stained with three different coloured stains in order to allow the details of the red and white blood cells and platelets to be visible.
