Charlie came in with a swollen ear. Turns out it was filled with blood! This is due to trauma, scratching or shaking as a result of an ear infection. The tiny blood vessels in the ear burst and blood accumulated between the cartilage and the skin. This is most commonly seen in dogs but Charlie the cat has been rather unlucky. :-( We performed otohaematoma surgery, which is the draining of the blood from the ear and suturing a sponge to the ear to prevent the build-up of blood again.
